ICYMI: Rosen Slams Opposition to Bipartisan Bill Banning Bump Stocks

Following Supreme Court Decision, Rosen Joined A Bipartisan Bill to Permanently Ban Bump Stocks

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) slammed opposition in the Senate to a unanimous consent request to pass a bipartisan bill she cosponsored to ban bump stocks in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the Trump-era ban. Senator Rosen called out extreme Senate Republicans who dismissed the need to ban bump stocks and highlighted the devastation these firearm modifications caused during the 1 October shooting in Las Vegas.

NBC News: ‘Shame on him for disrespecting the dead’: Nevada senator erupts after Sen. JD Vance’s bump stock remarks

By Frank Thorp V and Sahil Kapur

Key Points:

  • Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., tore into Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, on Monday over remarks he made about bump stocks as the Senate grapples with whether to ban them.
  • Vance, who is widely considered a vice presidential contender on the GOP ticket with former President Donald Trump, called efforts by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and other Democrats to ban the devices “a huge distraction.”
  • His comments drew a fiery response from Rosen, who faces re-election this year. The Las Vegas gunman used firearms equipped with bump stocks.
  • “This is not a fake problem,” she told reporters. “Let him come to Las Vegas. Let him see the memorial for those people who died. Let him talk to those families. It’s not a fake problem. Those families are dead.”
  • “Las Vegas was changed forever because of what the shooter did, and the bump stocks helped him. And let JD Vance come — and I’m going to take him to the memorials. We’re going to talk to — talk about our first responders, our ambulance drivers, our police, our firefighters, people at the blood bank, regular people. Shame on him. Shame on him for disrespecting the dead,” the normally mild-mannered Rosen said in a rare flash of anger.
  • Rosen said Monday that she supports the Second Amendment, but she argued there is plenty Congress can still do to keep people safe.

By Ayden Runnels

Key Points:

  • Bump stocks were used in the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting on the Strip allowing a gunman to fire hundreds of rounds of ammunition in just 10 minutes into a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers in the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
  • “We lost Nevadans that day,” Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., told senators Tuesday. “Sixty people were killed in the largest mass shooting in American history; families were torn apart. For us, the carnage created by bump stocks is very real.”
  • “The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Trump-era bump stock ban was a brazen reversal of a common-sense measure to help prevent the kind of mass violence we saw on 1 October in Las Vegas, which remains the deadliest shooting in American history,” Rosen said in a statement Tuesday.

KOLO Reno: Rosen joins bill to ban bump stocks

Anchor: “Senate Democrats took to the floor today, proposing a legislation to place a federal ban on bump stocks, but the bill was blocked by Senate Republicans. The bill aimed to put a federal ban on sales of bump stock devices, which are used to convert semi-automatic rifles into weapons that can shoot hundreds of rounds per minute. Some GOP members back the ban, while others call the bill an overreach. They say it could prevent use of other firearm accessories that make it easier for some individuals, such as disabled military veterans, to use guns. Despite the setback, Senator Jacky Rosen is calling for her fellow lawmakers to take action.”

Senator Rosen: “The Trump-era ban was common sense and it saved lives. We now have a responsibility to make it permanent in federal law.”

Anchor: “Last week the Supreme Court struck down a ban on bump stocks that was approved by then president Donald Trump.”
