WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) announced that Children’s Cabinet, Inc., a Reno-based nonprofit agency, will receive more than $130,000 in federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to set up a program to reach runaway and homeless youth in the state. The Children’s Cabinet helps more than 12,000 families annually with a wide range of services to keep children safe and families together.
“Youth experiencing homelessness and those that run away face increased risks to their health and safety as well as educational and long-term stability challenges,” said Senator Rosen. “This critical issue disproportionately impacts our state, and I’m glad the Children’s Cabinet in Nevada will receive federal funding to provide important resources for at-risk youth in our communities to ensure their well-being.”
“I’m glad to see this funding go toward helping at-risk youth in Northern Nevada and making sure they are as safe as possible,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’ll continue advocating in the Senate for children and young people in the Silver State.”
“These funds will allow us to implement a comprehensive outreach program that identifies runaway, homeless and street youth in Washoe County,” said Kim Young, Chief Executive Officer of The Children’s Cabinet. “This is an opportunity to expand our community’s safety net for youth in need by helping youth build connections to school, address their social and emotional well-being and assist with building permanent connections.”
Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto have been actively working at the federal level to address the issue of youth homelessness in Nevada. They have previously announced federal funding for assisting Nevada homeless and at-risk youth. Senator Rosen recently introduced the bipartisan Helping Foster and Homeless Youth Achieve Act, which requires higher education institutions receiving federal assistance to waive application fees for foster and homeless youth.
