ICYMI: Rosen Introduces Resolution Opposing Far-Right Republican Plan to Impose National Sales Tax

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) introduced a Senate resolution opposing Congressional Republicans’ plan to impose a nationwide sales tax on all goods and services, which would increase prices for hardworking families by 30 percent. Instead of this misguided tax increase, Rosen’s resolution calls for supporting a tax cut that will help working families and grow the middle class.

Key Points:

  • Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) are introducing a resolution formally opposing a much-maligned Republican proposal to establish a national sales tax.
  • Rosen and Tester’s resolution, which boasts 12 cosponsors, also “supports the passage of a responsible tax cut” to benefit middle-class families. The Democrats don’t expand much more on this in the resolution.
  • The resolution “opposes paying for any tax cuts with cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, or cuts to pay and benefits for our service members, veterans, or law enforcement.”

The Hill: Senate Democrats unveil resolution condemning Republicans’ national sales tax proposal

By Jared Gans

Key Points:

  • The resolution from Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) would declare that the Senate opposes the Fair Tax Act of 2023 and supports the passage of a “responsible tax cut” that would benefit working families, grow the middle class and make the wealthiest individuals and billion-dollar corporations pay “their fair share” of taxes.
  • Tester and Rosen cited an analysis from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center that said the bill would take more money from lower-income and middle-class families than the current system and “increasingly” burden parents.
  • “I urge the full Senate to join me in rejecting this new tax and, instead, work toward a tax cut for the middle class to give hardworking families more breathing room,” Rosen said in the release.

The Nevada Independent: With an eye on 2024, Rosen denounces far-right tax plan that abolishes IRS, sets 30% sales tax

By Gabby Birenbaum

Key Points:

  • The proposal would shift most of the tax burden to low-income and middle-income people, who must spend a much higher percentage of their income on goods and services than wealthier individuals.
  • Though FairTax proponents say families would get monthly rebates to cover certain essential goods such as groceries, groups across the ideological spectrum, including the Wall Street Journal editorial board, the Bush administration, and Democrats, agree the proposal would massively increase the cost of goods, the tax burden on the middle class and the deficit.
  • “At a time when hardworking families are experiencing high inflation and rising costs, Congressional Republicans are working to enact a tax plan that would dramatically raise the prices families pay for food, medicine, and all other goods and services,” Rosen said in a statement.
  • Beyond filing a Senate resolution condemning it, Rosen also penned an op-ed slamming the tax proposal – illustrating just how toxic she thinks it is.
