ICYMI: Rosen Fights to Secure Federal Resources for Law Enforcement to Hire and Retain More Officers

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) joined her colleagues in co-sponsoring the bipartisan Recruit and Retain Act, which would support law enforcement agencies’ efforts to hire and retain more police officers. The bill would establish a federal pipeline to support increased collaboration between local departments and schools to help facilitate recruitment activities and encourage more young people to enter law enforcement careers.

Senator Rosen has consistently supported Nevada’s law enforcement community to ensure they are well-resourced and that communities are kept safe from crime. As part of the government funding legislation last year, Senator Rosen secured millions in funding for police departments across Nevada. Earlier this year, Senator Rosen also announced federal funding opportunities for local police departments to hire more officers and incentivize community policing efforts.

By Casey Harrison and Teresa Moss

Key Points:

  • Federal legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., aims to address a staffing shortage in police departments nationwide as law enforcement agencies continue to grapple with a decline in officers.
  • The Recruit and Retain Act would update existing federal grant programs to infuse an additional $3 million annually for the creation of a federal pipeline program to support collaboration between local departments and schools to help facilitate recruitment among young people and encourage them to pursue a career in law enforcement.
  • “I’ve talked to law enforcement leaders all across Nevada, and they told me one of the biggest challenges they face is really a dire shortage of police officers and how difficult it is to recruit and, of course, retain them,” Rosen told the Sun this week. “So this bipartisan legislation that I’m supporting is going to provide more resources to police departments so they can facilitate these recruitment activities, especially in schools, where we can recruit, hire and hopefully retain those young folks.”
  • In a statement, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill, who oversees Las Vegas’ Metro Police, the largest law enforcement agency in Nevada, praised the bill for attempting to address recruiting woes at a grassroots level.
