WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, met with Howard Lutnick, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Commerce. During their meeting, Senator Rosen emphasized the importance of supporting key industries in Nevada – including travel and tourism, solar, and the critical mineral supply chain – and pressed the nominee to continue the Commerce Department’s critical investments in Nevada to expand broadband access and support the Lithium Loop Tech Hub. She also expressed her serious concerns about the impact of President-elect Trump’s proposed across-the-board tariffs and how they could raise costs for hardworking Nevada families.
“I met with Secretary of Commerce-nominee Howard Lutnick to discuss his nomination and vision for the role,” said Senator Rosen. “Nevada is home to a wide variety of critical industries that rely on the Department of Commerce, particularly our solar industry that employs thousands of Nevadans. I emphasized to Mr. Lutnick my commitment to working with the Department to support the industries in my state, while sharing my concerns that proposed across-the-board tariffs could raise costs for consumers. I look forward to hearing more from Mr. Lutnick during his confirmation hearing.”
Senator Rosen has consistently worked to support Nevada’s growing industries. She helped secure the Tech Hub designation and nearly $21 million in funding for the Lithium Loop project led by the University of Nevada, Reno. Earlier this year, she announced nearly $30 million to support Nevada’s clean energy economy. Senator Rosen’s provision to support the development of a secure and reliable domestic critical mineral supply chain and grow the mining workforce was included in the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. She also led the charge to secure a two-year pause on job-killing tariffs that would have devastated Nevada’s solar industry.
