Rosen Praises Federal Action to Protect Ruby Mountains

Senator Rosen Has Long Pushed To Protect Nevada’s Ruby Mountains

ELKO, NV – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced proposed protections for the Ruby Mountains, which Senator Rosen has been pushing for on behalf of Tribes, sportsmen, and recreationists in Nevada. The proposed protections would withdraw more than 260,000 acres of land in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest from eligibility for oil or gas leasing. A 90-day public comment period is now open on this proposed withdrawal.

“In Nevada, we are incredibly lucky to be home to some of our nation’s most beautiful public lands and have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors right here in our backyard,” said Senator Rosen. “The Ruby Mountains are a true natural treasure, which is why I’ve been pushing to protect them from actions that would compromise Nevadans’ ability to enjoy them. I’m glad to see the Department of the Interior take the necessary steps following this push to protect Nevada’s ‘Swiss Alps.’ I’ll keep working to ensure these protections are finalized.”

Senator Rosen has been a leader in protecting Nevada’s beautiful outdoors. She helped introduce the Ruby Mountains Protection Act with Senator Cortez Masto. Senator Rosen’s Washoe County Lands Bill would also conserve nearly a million acres of public lands in Northern Nevada. She also successfully pushed to make Avi Kwa Ame a national monument and has been advocating for a national monument at Bahsahwahbee.
