Rosen Statement on President Trump’s Attempt to Dismantle the Department of Education

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) issued the following statement after President Trump signed an Executive Order to try to dismantle the Department of Education.

“President Trump’s action to attempt to dismantle the Department of Education will gut support for public schools and potentially lead to reduced funding for schools and fewer teachers, all while pushing to give more tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy,” said Senator Rosen. “This shameful move is going to hurt Nevada students by putting the programs they rely on most — including mentorship programs that support veterans and at-risk students, and protections for students with special needs — on the chopping block. It threatens our kids’ future, and I’ll push back against this illegal attempt to dismantle our education system.”

Each fiscal year, Nevada receives more than one billion dollars from the Department to support students. In the 2023-2024 school year, Nevada received more than $70 million in TRIO funding through the Department to support students from different backgrounds, including veterans, with programs for tutoring and mentoring. More than 8,270 Nevada students are enrolled in TRIO.

Senator Rosen has been fighting back against reckless cuts at the Department of Education that hurt our kids and teachers. This week, she joined Senate colleagues in a letter to Secretary of Education Linda McMahon condemning the administration’s reckless and illegal firing of half of the workforce at the U.S. Department of Education.
