Rosen Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting

This Shooting Was The Deadliest Antisemitic Attack In American History

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), the first former synagogue president to serve in the United States Senate and a co-founder and co-chair of the Senate Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, released the following statement commemorating the fifth anniversary of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh — the deadliest attack on the Jewish American community in U.S. history.

“Five years ago, our nation witnessed the deadliest antisemitic attack in American history, when Jewish worshippers were targeted and brutally murdered because of their faith,” said Senator Rosen. “As we honor the memories of those whose lives were tragically cut short, we must continue pushing back against antisemitism. Whether in our communities or on college campuses, anti-Jewish incidents are spiking. This bigotry has no place in the United States, and we stand together to forcefully reject it and protect Jewish communities from harassment, threats, and violence.”

Senator Rosen has been a leader in countering antisemitism and increasing resources to protect synagogues and houses of worship. Last week, she successfully helped lead a push to call for increased funding to protect synagogues and Jewish community centers from targeted violence, which was included in the President’s supplemental funding request to Congress. Earlier this week, Senator Rosen also helped introduce a bipartisan resolution denouncing antisemitism at institutions of higher education, which passed unanimously. As co-chair of the Senate Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, which she and Senator James Lankford (R-OK) launched in October 2020 on the second anniversary of the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting, Senator Rosen led the push to create the first-ever national strategy to counter antisemitism released earlier this year.
