WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced that her bipartisan amendment with Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) to help curb the swarms of Mormon crickets plaguing communities in Northern Nevada, like Elko County, was unanimously adopted into the Senate’s government funding package. This amendment will provide a total of $6 million for the treatment and suppression of Mormon crickets across Western states. The severe drought in the West resulted in larger, more severe outbreaks of Mormon crickets in Northern Nevada earlier this year, causing damage to crops and landscapes, posing a risk to public safety, and hurting local economies.
“As we saw earlier this year, large swarms of Mormon crickets overwhelmed communities like Elko and others across Northern Nevada, posing a real threat to public safety and harming local economies,” said Senator Rosen. “That’s why I pushed for increased funding to ensure communities in Nevada have the resources they need to be better prepared to fight the invasion of Mormon crickets ahead of next spring.”
Senator Rosen has been fighting to ensure Northern Nevada gets its fair share of federal resources. Earlier this year she led a letter to President Biden in support of Governor Lombardo’s request for additional resources and urging the President to issue a Major Disaster Declaration for Nevada in the wake of severe storms that devastated Eureka County. As a result, President Biden issued the declaration, which provided Nevada with federal resources to repair homes, businesses, and other infrastructure damaged by the flooding, rockslides, and landslides.
