Resolution Celebrates And Highlights The Importance Of STEM Education In The U.S.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) introduced a bipartisan resolution formally designating November 8, 2023 as “National Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Day”. The senators’ resolution highlights and celebrates the importance of STEM Education in the United States and emphasizes the need to bolster and diversify the STEM workforce. Today also marks the two-year anniversary of Senators Rosen and Capito launching the Senate’s first Women in STEM Caucus, a bipartisan group that works to advance women’s participation in STEM education and careers.
“As a former computer programmer, I know firsthand how important STEM education is for the jobs of the future,” said Senator Rosen. “This bipartisan resolution recognizes November 8th as National STEM Day to celebrate STEM education and encourage more students to pursue careers in these fields.”
“STEM fields are where the in-demand jobs are right now, and it’s where they will be in the future. These are jobs in industries that are critical to our economy, will help our states and country as a whole grow,” said Senator Capito. “I am proud to help introduce this resolution designating Nov. 8 as National STEM Day to celebrate this growing field and inspire the next generation to get excited and involved in this field.”

This bipartisan resolution has been endorsed by STEM Education Coalition, Society of Women Engineers, the Afterschool Alliance, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Center for Excellence in Education, the Association for Women in Science, Code.org, and The American Mathematical Society. In addition to Senators Rosen and Capito, it is co-sponsored by Senator Tina Smith (D-MN).
Senator Rosen has led the push to create more opportunities for everyone in the STEM fields. Earlier this year, Senator Rosen introduced her bipartisan STEM RESTART Act, which would support mid-career internships for workers looking to return or transition into the STEM workforce. Last year, Rosen’s Rural STEM Education Act, which breaks down barriers rural students face in accessing STEM education, was signed into law as part of the CHIPS and Science Act. Senator Rosen’s bipartisan Building Blocks of STEM Act, which she introduced with Senator Capito and helps increase girls’ participation in computer science, was signed into law in 2019.
