WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement on what would have been the 51st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, the second since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned it. To mark this anniversary, Senator Rosen penned an opinion piece for the Las Vegas Sun highlighting why she will continue fighting for reproductive freedom in a post-Roe world.
“Fifty-one years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized that women had the constitutional right to make their own reproductive choices,” said Senator Rosen. “Since Roe v. Wade was wrongly overturned, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates to anti-choice attacks and extreme abortion bans that have led to countless horror stories of women not being able to get the lifesaving medical care they need. Anti-choice politicians have made it clear that they will not stop until they enact a nationwide abortion ban that would harm women in pro-choice states like Nevada. I’ll continue fighting every day to block a nationwide abortion ban and restore women’s reproductive freedom.”
Senator Rosen has been a leader in the fight against extreme anti-choice attacks. Last week, during a Senate briefing on the state of abortion rights in the U.S., she highlighted the effects of the ongoing anti-choice attacks on women’s access to reproductive care. Senator Rosen also recently joined her colleagues in a letter urging Senate appropriators to reject the anti-abortion policy provisions that House Republicans inserted into their appropriations bills. She also helped introduce the Let Doctors Provide Reproductive Health Care Act to protect doctors and other health care professionals from being prosecuted for providing reproductive care to their patients in compliance with state law where they practice. Additionally, Senator Rosen helped introduce the Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine Roe v. Wade in federal law.
