Following Rosen Push, FTC Sues to Block Grocery Store Mega Merger

In December, Senator Rosen Sent A Letter Urging Federal Trade Commission To Consider Blocking Merger That Would Reduce Competition And Lead To Higher Prices

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced that, at her urging, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has sued to block the Kroger-Albertsons grocery store mega merger because it could reduce competition and further raise grocery prices. In December, she sent a letter calling on FTC Chair Lina Khan to review and consider blocking this mega merger over concerns that it would increase food prices. This is the largest proposed supermarket merger in U.S. history, and the FTC charges that this deal will eliminate competition, likely leading to higher prices at the grocery store and lowering the quality of products and services.

“Lowering costs for hardworking Nevada families is a top priority, and I’ve been pushing back against big corporations that want to reduce competition and further increase grocery prices,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m glad to see the FTC take steps at my urging to block this mega merger and protect families from even higher prices.”

Senator Rosen has been a leader in fighting to lower costs for hardworking Nevadans. She successfully pushed the FTC to open an investigation of Exxon Mobil’s proposed acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources that could greatly reduce competition and drive up gas prices at the pump for Nevadans. Senator Rosen also introduced the Housing Oversight and Mitigating Exploitation (HOME) Act to crack down on housing price gouging by corporate investors who are buying up housing stock. Additionally, Senator Rosen helped secure several wins in the Inflation Reduction Act that will help lower energy and health care costs for Nevadans.
