WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) helped introduce the Shrinkflation Prevention Act to crack down on big corporations that deceive consumers by selling smaller sizes of their products without lowering the prices, leading Nevada families to pay more for less at the grocery store. The bill would empower the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state attorneys general to take action in federal court against corporations reducing product size without a reduction in price and direct the FTC to prohibit shrinkflation as an unfair and deceptive practice.
“Nevadans are paying more at the grocery store every week but getting smaller and smaller quantities of products in return,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m taking action to crack down on the biggest corporations that are making record profits while shrinking their products and forcing hardworking families to spend more for less.”
Senator Rosen has been a leader in cracking down on some of the biggest corporations to lower costs for hardworking Nevadans. This week, she announced that, at her urging, the FTC sued to block the Kroger-Albertsons grocery store mega merger because it could reduce competition and further raise grocery prices. Senator Rosen also successfully pushed the FTC to open an investigation of a Big Oil merger that could greatly reduce competition and drive up gas prices at the pump for Nevadans. Senator Rosen also introduced the Housing Oversight and Mitigating Exploitation (HOME) Act to crack down on housing price gouging by corporate investors who are buying up housing stock.
