WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions and the Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety, joined her Democratic colleagues in helping to introduce the FAMILY Act. This bill would provide millions of working Americans with partially-paid leave for health reasons, pregnancy, and serious health conditions affecting a family member.
“Families across Nevada deserve the job security that comes as a result of access to paid family and medical leave,” said Senator Rosen. “No person should worry about losing their paycheck because of a family issue or emergency. This extension of the Family and Medical Leave Act is a sensible step forward and will provide hardworking Nevada families with much-needed peace of mind and economic stability when they need it most.”
BACKGROUND: The FAMILY Act would provide public and private sector workers with up to 12 weeks of partially-paid leave for health reasons, pregnancy, childbirth recovery, adoption, military caregiving, and the serious health condition of a child, spouse, or partner. The rate of pay would be two-thirds of an individual’s wages, capped at no more than $4,000 per month, and would be paid for by minor payroll tax from both employers and employees (0.2 percent of an employee’s wages). While the legislation would apply to employees at all companies, including those with fewer than 50 employees, existing FMLA job protections would still only apply to those working for businesses with more than 50 employees.
