WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) released the following statement applauding the National Institute of Justice for awarding multiple grants to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Assistance (OCJA) totaling $1,266,391 to be used to support forensic science laboratories in Nevada, reduce the ballistic and DNA evidence backlogs, and analyze the backlog of opioid cases in the state.
“Access to cutting-edge forensic equipment and resources will reduce the turnaround times for criminal investigations,” said the Senators. “Nevada has a vital need for forensic sciences funding, especially when it comes to reducing the backlog of DNA evidence. We will continue to support forward-thinking solutions that better enable Nevada law enforcement to solve cases and protect the public.”
