WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) released the following statement in response to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) blocking a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that the constitutional rights of Americans must be respected; that violence and looting are unlawful and unacceptable; and that Congress condemns the order to have federal officers use gas and rubber bullets on peaceful protesters.
“Americans have a constitutional right to protest. It is unacceptable for the President of the United States to use tear gas to clear out peaceful protestors for a photo,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “I am deeply disappointed that Senator McConnell blocked a resolution I co-sponsored supporting this constitutional right, condemning violence, and calling out the President for his failure to lead.”
“Peaceful protesters in America have every right to use their voices for change, and all of us should be listening with compassion to what they are saying about systemic racism in this country and working for change,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “It is vital that in times like these, our nation’s leaders work to calm and heal the country, rather than divide it further. I will always work to defend the constitutional rights of Nevadans from every walk of life.”
