WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) released the following statement applauding the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) for awarding the City of West Wendover a grant totaling $1,175,000. This grant will fund revitalization and infrastructure projects to support the city’s economic growth, expansion, and diversification.
“We applaud the EDA for awarding this grant that will support West Wendover in opening additional land for commercial development. This infrastructure investment will help diversify the city’s economy by preparing it for new business opportunities, and set it up for long-term economic stability,” said the Senators. “We will continue to work in Congress to ensure that cities across the Silver State have the resources they need to rebound from the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.”
BACKGROUND: More specifically, this EDA investment will support the City of West Wendover with revitalizing its downtown area by repairing the roadways to help existing businesses and allow for business expansion in Elko County, Nevada, a designated Opportunity Zone. In addition, the project will open up 60 acres of land for infrastructure development in the downtown area to help prepare the community for diverse economic opportunities, which will diversify the city’s economy, support job creation, attract private investment, and advance economic resiliency throughout the region.
EDA grants are awarded through a competitive process based upon the application’s merit, the applicant’s eligibility, and the availability of funds. More information on EDA’s grant process and investment process can be found at www.eda.gov.
Last year, Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen helped pass the CARES Act and Fiscal Year 2021 appropriations, which have provided the U.S. with more than $1.5 billion in EDA funds. In June, both Senators sent a letter to Congressional leadership calling for additional funding for the EDA’s programs in future coronavirus economic recovery legislation.
