WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, released the following statement applauding news that the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has awarded the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) a grant totaling $2,000,000 to support research and development in nuclear science, engineering, and security:
“Congratulations to UNLV for receiving this funding, which will help to advance their research in nuclear science, engineering, and safety – all issues important to the state of Nevada,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “I know the benefits that nuclear science and engineering provide our nation. The research UNLV is conducting will further our goals of development, while working to advance measures that keep our nation’s nuclear stockpile safe and secure.”
BACKGROUND: The University of Nevada Las Vegas received this grant as part of a consortium of 11 universities focused on research into nuclear science, engineering, and security. The mission of this consortium is to train the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers while engaging in research and development spanning basic aspects of new technology and methods to programmatic work directly supporting the nuclear security and nonproliferation missions of the NNSA.
UNLV will receive its grant funding in yearly installments over the next 5 years, receiving $400,000 each year.
The Senate Subcommittee on Strategic Forces holds jurisdiction over nuclear and strategic forces, arms control and non-proliferation programs, ballistic missile defense, space programs, and the Department of Energy defense nuclear, and defense environmental management programs, which includes the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Nevada National Security Site.
