In Nevada, Postmaster General DeJoy Has Recently Proposed Relocating Processing Of Mail From Reno, Nevada To Sacramento, California
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) joined a group of over 20 Senators in a letter urging Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to stop any changes or relocations to United States Postal Service (USPS) processing facilities that would result in job losses and further degrade mail delivery performance, especially in rural states. USPS recently proposed relocating the processing of mail from the Reno Processing and Distribution Center to Sacramento, California. Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto, along with Congressman Mark Amodei (R-NV-02), recently sent a letter expressing their serious concern about the proposed relocation.
“We write regarding Mail Processing Facility Reviews and service standards at the United States Postal Service, and to urge you to stop any changes that will result in job losses and further degrade mail delivery performance across the network, especially in rural states,” wrote the senators. “While the Postal Service states there will be no career layoffs or slowed service, we are concerned these facility reviews will functionally result in both. In many instances, outgoing mail processing will move hundreds of miles to a regional facility, outside reasonable commuting distance and, in some cases, to another state entirely.”
“In Nevada, mail processing at the Reno facility will likely transfer to a facility in Sacramento, California, a distance of over 130 miles,” they continued. “The Postal Service is at its best when it treats its workers right and delivers mail in a timely fashion. We therefore urge you to prevent facility changes or outright closures that will result in any job losses and slower mail.”

Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto have been leading the efforts to support postal operations in Nevada. They recently joined the bipartisan Postal Police Reform Act to address the sharp increase in mail theft and armed robberies against postal workers. Senator Rosen is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that oversees the USPS.
