Rosen, Cortez Masto Introduce Legislation to Investigate Impact of Trump Tariffs on Working Families

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) joined Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) in introducing the Tariff Transparency Act. This legislation will require the United States International Trade Commission to investigate how Donald Trump’s recent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will impact the American people,

 and make that information public.

Last Tuesday, the Trump Administration implemented a 25 percent tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico, taxing working families for their food, energy, and car purchases. Just a few days later, the Trump Administration delayed implementation of tariffs on goods complying with the 2018 USMCA free trade treaty, creating more chaos and uncertainty for Nevada businesses and families.

“We know that Nevadans are being squeezed by high costs and rising prices, and President Trump’s tariffs have effectively added a new tax for Americans on goods imported from our top two trading partners, Canada and Mexico,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “We need immediate and honest transparency about just how badly these tariffs are hurting hardworking Nevadans and families all over the country — and that’s exactly what our bill will do.”

“Over the past month, families across the United States have seen costs skyrocket, and the Administration’s decision to put tariffs on our allies means there’s no end in sight,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Trump’s tariffs are a tax on goods we need to go about our lives – things like food, gas, and cars. This bill will prove that the American people are worse off thanks to President Donald Trump.”

“Marylanders are struggling to put food on the table and afford the basic necessities as it is. The last thing we need are tariffs that will raise prices,” said Senator Alsobrooks. “The truth is this: the Trump Administration knows that the tariffs on allies like Canada and Mexico will raise prices for consumers, spike inflation, and harm American small businesses. If they disagree, now is their time to prove it. My bill will force a nonpartisan study on this Administration’s tariffs and how they will impact everyday Americans.”

Additional cosponsors include Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Michael Bennet (D-Co.), Brian Schatz (D-Hi.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Va.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and Andy Kim (D-N.J.).

Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto have been working to lower costs for families in Nevada and across the United States. Rosen recently sent a letter urging the Trump Administration to reverse course on imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico to prevent housing prices from rising even further. Earlier this week, Cortez Masto introduced two bills to help address the affordable housing crisis in Nevada and across the country. The Senators also sent a letter to the Trump Administration demanding answers on the national security impacts of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods.
