WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) reintroduced the bipartisan Lactation Spaces for Veteran Moms Act to ensure every medical center managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) contains a hygienic, private space specifically designated for nursing for veterans, VA employees, and their partners. As of 2022, there were only 90 VA medical centers across the country with such designated rooms.
“We must always ensure our VA facilities are accessible to all veterans, including nursing mothers,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “That’s why I’m introducing bipartisan legislation to make sure that VA medical facilities are equipped with these spaces for veterans, employees, and their family members to nurse in hygienic, private, and comfortable conditions.”
“Our women veterans deserve our support—and that includes moms and their babies have greater access to nursing rooms in public places,” said Senator Murkowski. “Currently, only half of VA medical centers have a nursing room—an issue that deserves our attention. By improving access to hygienic nursing rooms in all VA medical centers, we are providing support to veteran mothers who give so much to our country.”
Senator Rosen has been a leader in supporting Nevada’s veterans. Last month, she helped pass the Commitment to Veteran Support and Outreach Act to expand and support state and local entities that work to inform veterans of their eligibility for VA programs and services. Senator Rosen also recently secured a bipartisan provision to expand telehealth services for veterans in this year’s Senate government funding package. Last year, Senator Rosen helped pass the bipartisan PACT Act to extend VA benefits and health care to all veterans suffering from illnesses as a result of exposure to burn pits and other toxins during their service overseas.
