LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), held a roundtable with Nevada educational and medical experts to discuss strategies for preventing teen suicide and addressing the mental health needs of Nevada students. This roundtable follows a recent surge of Clark County students who died by suicide since the onset of the pandemic. Rosen raised this critical issue with Secretary of Education nominee Dr. Miguel Cardona during his confirmation hearing earlier this month.
“During this pandemic, our students have faced unprecedented mental health challenges,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “Today, I met with Nevada medical and educational experts to discuss steps our state is taking to ensure the safety and well-being of Nevada students, actions I’ve taken in Congress to support our students, and the ongoing challenges that we must address as we work to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. I will continue working to help Nevadans through this public health crisis.”
BACKGROUND: Last Congress, Senator Rosen co-sponsored the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act, legislation that would create a grant fund program to help add additional mental health service providers at schools.
Also last Congress, Senator Rosen also co-sponsored the Mental Health Services for Students Act, legislation that would provide funding to build partnerships between schools and community-based organizations that can help students get mental health services at school, as well as train teachers, families, and community members to recognize when a student is experiencing a mental health crisis and make sure they get the help they need.
