LAS VEGAS, NV – This weekend, Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) spoke at this year’s TRIO/GEAR UP Day reception hosted by the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
“I was honored to celebrate the excellent work that programs like UNLV TRIO and GEAR UP provide to nearly 26,000 Nevada students,” said Senator Rosen. “Programs like these are essential for underrepresented students in Nevada and across the country who are working towards achieving a higher education. In Congress, I pledge my continued support for these programs that help our students succeed.”
BACKGROUND: Senator Rosen is a co-sponsor of the GEAR UP For Success Act (S.303), which would enhance the GEAR UP federal grant program by giving recipients increased flexibility to cater to the needs of local students, reducing administrative burdens for recipients, and developing a more competitive and fair application process.
Last Congress, Rosen signed letters supporting increased funding for federal TRIO programs in Fiscal Year 2019 and 2019.
The Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach at UNLV coordinates the largest suite of federally funded TRIO, Title III AANAPISI, NSF LSAMP and GEAR UP programs in the nation. The programs help first generation and low-income middle and high school students, college students and adults with academic counseling and tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring and financial guidance to help them succeed and ultimately complete college.
