WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement in response to the Administration’s move to end asylum protections for most Central American migrants.
“Let’s be clear: there is nothing illegal about seeking asylum. Yet this Administration continues to ignore our laws and effectively end asylum for migrant families who are risking their lives fleeing persecution and violent circumstances in their home countries and in search for safety,” dijo el Senador Rosen. “We must treat all immigrants with the dignity and compassion that represent our American values. I will continue to work across the aisle on comprehensive immigration reform and legislation that addresses the humanitarian crisis at our southern border.”
BACKGROUND: In April, during a Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing, Senator Rosen questioned Border Patrol officials about reports that the President directed agency personnel to violate the law and close the ports of entry at the southern border to all migrants, preventing individuals from legally seeking asylum in the U.S.
Also in April, during a Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing, Senator Rosen questioned the President of the Migration Policy Institute about recent actions by the Trump Administration to cut humanitarian aid to Central America, undermining U.S. influence in the region and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis at the southern border.
