WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) joined her colleagues Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Roger Wicker (R-MS), in helping to introduce a resolution to commemorate Juneteenth as a date of historical significance, marking the anniversary of the end of slavery in the South. Juneteenth has been celebrated every June 19th since 1865.
“June 19th marks the date in 1865 when President Lincoln’s order made it all the way south, and the end of slavery was finally recognized in each and every corner of our country,” said Senator Rosen. “Juneteenth gives us an opportunity to ponder the consequences of this indescribable chapter in American history, but it’s also an opportunity to celebrate the countless rich contributions the African American community has made to every facet of our American identity. This historic celebration of freedom recognizes the important step forward that our nation took in creating a country that is truly free.”
