LAS VEGAS, NV – This week, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, visited Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases. During her visits, she met with senior leaders from both bases, along with the Airmen responsible for the missions taking place in Southern Nevada that support global operations.
“My visits to Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee will help me be more effective in supporting national defense initiatives,” said Senator Rosen. “I met with Airmen on both bases to learn about the vital role they play in military operations around the world and discuss how Congress can support their needs both operationally and through quality of life initiatives. I also met with senior military leadership to hear about the challenges and needs of both our Southern Nevada bases, and I will continue working with them to ensure that our men and women in uniform have the resources needed to secure our national defense.
BACKGROUND: This was Senator Rosen’s first in-person visit to Creech and Nellis Air Force Bases since joining the Senate Armed Services Committee in January of this year. Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases are two of the services’ most important installations, which besides providing high-level air combat training for U.S. and allied forces, also provide real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support to U.S. and allied forces deployed around the world.
In December of last year, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 (NDAA), which included five of Senator Rosen’s bipartisan bills to support U.S. military and civilian cybersecurity, as well as numerous victories for Nevada – including a much-needed generator for Creech Air Force Base to allow them to sustain operations, a request spearheaded by Senator Rosen – and a pay raise for our troops. The five bipartisan bills include:
- PROMOTES Act (S.3900): Introduced by Senators Rosen, Rounds (R-SD), Blackburn (R-TN), and Peters (D-MI), this bill authorizes the Secretary of Defense to establish a grant program for STEM in JROTC units.
- PROTECT Act (S.4195): Introduced by Senators Rosen and Cassidy (R-LA), this legislation formally authorizes and provides stability for CISA’s Cybersecurity Education Training Assistance Program (CETAP).
- Small Manufacturer Cybersecurity Enhancement Act (S.4598): Introduced by Senators Rosen and Young (R-IN), S.4598 authorizes the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Director of NIST, to provide funds to Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Centers for the provision of cybersecurity services to small manufacturers.
- The HACKED Act (S.2775) and the CYBER LEAP Act (S.3712): Introduced by Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) and co-led by Senator Rosen, these two bills improve the cyber workforce and establish cyber grand challenges, respectively.
